Peter Steinberger's OpenClaw, an agentic AI project, achieved 4.7 million downloads in a single week, merely eight months after its initial creation. Steinberger began the project to solve a personal annoyance: his coding agent had ceased functioning, and he lacked a mobile method to prompt it. He rapidly constructed a WhatsApp relay to bridge communication between his phone and Mac. This initial build, though not complex, exhibited novel behavior through short answers and unprompted check-ins. This was achieved by subtly adjusting the model's weights slightly outside their default distribution, deliberately aiming for a more conversational, less terminal-like interaction.
